Elizabethtown High School’s Theatre Guild is back with a classic – George Orwell’s “1984” with all the intensity, fear, and human anguish you remember. Adapted by Robert Owens, Wilton E. Hall, Jr., and William A. Miles, Jr. produced in special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois, this particular production focuses on the relationship between Winston, Julia, and O’Brien. In a world where love is forbidden, thoughts are criminal, and your every movement is under video surveillance, can the spirit of man survive? Is there any hope for the future? Will Big Brother prevail or is love truly stronger than hate? Performances are Friday, March 20th and Saturday, March 21st at 7:00 pm and Sunday, March 22nd at 3 pm. Tickets are $5 at the door. Watch the EPAC Facebook page for more information and to meet the cast in the coming weeks.
This authorized stage adaptation is true to the novel in which Orwell depicts with great power the horrors of man’s fate in a society where Big Brother is always watching—where everything that is not prohibited is compulsory. Come experience a theatrical event that is both powerful and disturbingly provocative. Orwell himself once said, “I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive. The moral to be drawn from the dangerous nightmare situation is a simple one: Don’t let it happen. It depends on you.”
Carmen Caldera-Brzoska has really enjoyed directing this cast, led by young actors, most of whom are new to the stage. “This is a very challenging piece of theatre and the subject matter is very heavy. We spent half of one of our Saturday rehearsals with local scholar, Carl Stoltzfus, discussing the book, Orwell, the time period in which the book was written, and why Orwell believed this type of dystopia could happen. The whole process has been amazing and these actors have embraced it with such enthusiasm. This is a show you do not want to miss!” Caldera-Brzoska also notes that this is a different script and adaptation than The PAC presented a few years ago, so there are different twists and turns!
Tickets are $5 for each performance and will be available in the EPAC Gallery 30 minutes before showtime. All proceeds from the play will go towards future productions by the EHS Theatre Guild. Performances are Friday, March 20th and Saturday, March 21st at 7:00 p.m. ET and Sunday, March 222nd at 3:00 p.m.
