Leadership Hardin County – Local & State Government Day 2015-16

We began our local and state government day with a quick coach bus ride to the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Headquarters in Frankfort where we were greeted by several chamber staff and volunteers.  Ashli Watts, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce representative and Central Hardin High School graduate gave us a brief breakdown of several of the laws that were up for vote during the 90-day legislative session which had just been passed around 3:30 that morning.  Watts also discussed the role of the Kentucky Chamber and that they are our, the businesses’, advocate and are the largest business organization in the state as they represent over 90,000 businesses in Kentucky.

The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is the business voice at the state level, however, Watts did emphasize that we, as local leaders and Chamber members, can also influence public policy and business decisions in Hardin County.  The key is staying involved in the community and becoming a leader in the workforce.
After leaving the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce the group took photo at the Capitol Rotunda and then a quick self-guided tour of the Capitol and Grounds.  As the legislative session had went into the wee hours of the morning we were not able to meet with any of our local representatives, however, we were able to see several of the offices and tour the beautiful grounds and enjoy lunch on the Capitol stairs.

The afternoon wrapped up back at the Hardin County Government Center in Elizabethtown where we took a complete tour of the new facility; including the Clerk’s, Sheriffs and 911 Coordinator’s offices.  Judge Berry and several local Magistrates, City Mayors and City Council members spoke on their role as leaders and involvement in the community. The day ended with a Q & A between each of these leaders and leadership class members.
