Leadership Hardin County-History Day 2016

HCCC Leadership

The Leadership Hardin County class started Hardin County History day at the Brown-Pusey House, a beautiful old home with a large sitting garden that holds a lot of history on its own. It was a perfect setting for the theme of the day.

The Chamber had a great agenda lined up for the class. It started with Charlie Skees “General Custer” as our first speaker. Mr. Skees gave us a very dramatic and entertaining rendition of the history of our great county. He made the whole lesson very enjoyable and his presentation was a great way for our class to learn more about our county. He spent a good portion of his lesson talking to us about the maps of the old layout of downtown Elizabethtown. Evidently, the people of Elizabethtown liked to burn things down. He showed us multiple buildings that were burned down and rebuilt and burned again. Overall, the talk Mr. Skees gave us was very informative.

After his talk he led us on an abbreviated walking tour of downtown, noting many old churches and places of significance in the history of Elizabethtown.

After our short tour, we walked to the Hardin County History Museum and were given a tour of the museum. The museum captures many of our big moments and ties to our history. Among the museum features is a large display dedicated to President Abraham Lincoln, which is to be expected.

After our tour of the museum we returned to the Brown-Pusey House and started our presentations of different time periods in Hardin County history, starting with 1755 and moving all the way up to current events. All the groups were fantastic and did a great job informing us about the history of Hardin County.

The class thanks the Hardin County History Day organizers. Members of the class, whether they are a Hardin County native or a transplant, found the activities interesting and entertaining.
