Leadership Class Explores State and Local Government

HCCC Leadership

On Feb. 2, members of the Leadership Hardin County class experienced a day of learning about local and state government. The day began with a field trip to Frankfort in which the class heard multiple presentations from state government groups who work to affect economic growth in the Commonwealth.

First, Katie Shanks and Jacqueline Pitts from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce discussed the chamber’s priorities for the 2017 legislative session. Main priorities shared included enacting right to work, improving worker’s compensation systems and enacting legal liability reform.

Terry Gill, Secretary of the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, followed with a presentation outlining the cabinet’s goals that focus on increasing investments in the state and making Kentucky a more business friendly state.

The final presenter was Stacey Shane, Executive Assistant for the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs. Mrs. Shane’s presentation helped LHC class members understand how the commission works to grow and protect the economic impact of the military.

LHC class members ended their time in Frankfort with a tour of the Kentucky Capitol building while learning about the building’s history and architectural beauty.

LHCOnce the class returned to Hardin County, the afternoon was spent learning about Hardin County government. Hardin County Judge-Executive Harry Berry led the class in learning about Hardin County Fiscal Court’s responsibilities and duties in providing various services to Hardin County residents. Services provided from departments such as EMS, 911, Animal Control, Sheriff Office, County Attorney, County Coroner, PVA, solid waste, etc. were discussed. The final item of the day was a tour of Hardin County Government’s new center.

While the day was extremely busy, it was also one that gave class members a glimpse of the inner workings of our local and state officials and how their collaborative team approach help Hardin County to continue to grow and prosper in its economic impact for our county’s citizens.
